Is it me or is the justice system in Singapore getting a little lackadaisal with regards to keeping standards? I mean, I had a good laugh when 2 parking attendants were photographed by STOMP parking their motorcycles illegally while spending their commission (earned by issuing parking tickets) on a sumptuous teabreak but the 2 cases highlighted in the papers today are of a more sombre and serious nature.
Firstly, I cannot believe that a inmate was given 8 strokes of the cane mistakenly although he was supposed to be given only 5. Such an error should definitely not have been made, more so because every extra stroke of the cane is a lot more pain and torture. I am glad that the family of the victim has chosen to bring the case to court instead of solving it through mediation because I feel the public should be aware of such grevious flaws in our judicial system, a result of overpaid but inefficient officers perhaps?
